Was sind überhaupt Buell-Motorräder? Vereinfacht gesagt: für die Straße zugelassene schnelle Motorräder von Harley Davidson. Aber eine Buell ist für die Fans noch viel mehr und mithin etwas Besonderes.

Die Buell Motorcycle Company war ein Motorradhersteller mit Firmensitz in East Troy, Wisconsin (USA). Am 15. Oktober 2009 gab der Eigentümer Harley-Davidson, für viele Motorradfans überraschend, die Einstellung der Motorradfertigung bekannt.

Buell (sprich: bjuell) ging 1993 unter der Beteiligung der Harley-Davidson Motor Company aus dem 1983 gegründeten Kleinstbetrieb von Erik Buell hervor, einem ehemaligen Rennfahrer, der bereits zuvor einige Zeit bei Harley-Davidson als Entwicklungsingenieur gearbeitet hatte.

Seit Februar 1998 hielt Harley-Davidson mit 98 Prozent die Mehrheit der Firmenanteile, bevor 2003 auch die bei Erik Buell verbliebenen zwei Prozent gekauft wurden. Erik Buell war bis zuletzt als Chairman Entwicklungschef zuständig für Konstruktion, Erprobung und Qualität. Am 15. Oktober 2009 gab Erik Buell das Ende der Serienproduktion von Motorrädern der Marke Buell bekannt. Die Produktion endete dann im Dezember vergangenen Jahres.

Erik Buell verließ daraufhin Harley-Davidson und gründete die Firma Erik Buell Racing. Diese produziert unter Lizenz von Harley-Davidson reine Rennmotorräder auf Basis der 1125R und vertreibt Rennsportzubehör.

Was macht nun Buell aus? Organisator Sigi Eickhorst: „Buell fahren ist eben anders.“

"The TT circuit compared to a normal race weekend at one of the MotoGP circuits is very similar; the only difference really is that it is a longer circuit and the fact that it's on public roads makes it a lot bumpier than the tracks we would visit."

"There were a couple of areas on the track - such as the bottom of Bray Hill - where Cameron was told to take it a bit easy because the GSV-R is not built for this type of environment, but besides that he was on his own to ride the bike the way he did."

"The Bridgestone tyres also worked really well around the whole circuit and that was another thing that helped Cameron do such an impressive first lap as he had so much confidence in them. He rode a full-spec GSV-R, just the same as if Loris or Alvaro were using it; the only change we made was to put on steel brake discs, because with the carbon ones that we use in GPs he wouldn't have got enough heat in them to work properly."

"Other than that he was on a full-blown MotoGP bike on British roads and I am happy that I was able to help in some way to make it such an amazing event for the fans at trackside and be a small part of the Isle of Man TT history!"

"We had a bit of help from the Relentless guys as they gave us some info about how they set-up the superbike for the TT course and we were able to modify the suspension - mostly for a safety point of view - to try to make the bike easier for Cameron to ride."

"The lap was really only supposed to be a demo lap, but as soon as Cameron got on the bike he said that if felt so good he was able to push a bit harder, so it looks like we got the settings about right from the start.

"When he got back we checked the data and it all looked really good and everything worked well. From that we were able to generate our first GPS MotoGP TT map for the whole circuit, showing exactly what was happening to the GSV-R over the Isle of Man Mountain course.

On the final, Dainese Senior Race day, Capirossi lead away the Suzuki parade on a Rizla Suzuki GSX-R1000 for his first ever lap of the famous TT course and afterwards commented:

Loris Capirossi says: "This place is incredible. I've seen the TV footage before, but nothing prepares you for the TT course. The surface is much bumpier than I imagined and when you see the speeds that these guys run at, it is simply amazing. It's a fantastic event that you could never replicate anywhere else in the world."

La raison principale pour laquelle le genre crossover n'est pas encore très populaire semble être la difficulté des acheteurs potentiels à bien cerner la nature des modèles et le genre d'expérience de pilotage qu'ils réservent, un peu à l'inverse d'une sportive pure comme une GSX-R ou d'une machine de tourisme de luxe comme une Gold Wing, des modèles dont la mission est évidente au premier coup d'oeil.

Cocktail de genres

Une fois familiarisé avec l'inhabituelle, mais tout de même agréable position de conduite ainsi qu'avec la livrée de puissance très plaisante bien que plutôt particulière du V-Twin, on découvre en la 990 SMT un nouveau genre de moto à tout faire. Qu'il s'agisse de jouer les sportives sur une route sinueuse, de se frayer un chemin à travers la jungle d'un centre-ville ou de rouler des heures durant vers une lointaine destination, la SMT non seulement répond aux attentes, elle le fait aussi en changeant de personnalité et de fonction de manière étonnamment transparente. Il reste maintenant à voir si toutes ces personnalités arriveront, comme KTM le souhaite, à réveiller l'intérêt de ces vieillissants motards.

La 990 Supermoto T s'avère un véritable cocktail de genres. On y est installé à peu près comme sur une aventurière, mais la position de conduite dénote une influence standard, et même légèrement sportive. Alors que des caractéristiques comme une importante hauteur de selle et de longs débattements de suspension rappellent des montures de type supermoto ou aventurière, on se retrouve «assis» sur une version délicieusement délinquante de l'excellent V-Twin LC8 d'un litre de la marque autrichienne. Oh, et n'oublions pas la paire de petites valises latérales, puisque le T du nom est là pour tourisme!

Le résultat de ce mélange décidément étrange de genres et de composantes se veut une expérience de conduite qu'on peut difficilement arriver à imaginer sans avoir enfourché la SMT. Perché assez haut, le pilote qui en ouvre les gaz pour la première fois sera surpris de la facilité avec laquelle la roue avant se soulève.
